Age and generational discrimination are common in today society. Although discrimination is illegal, many people tend to still do It even without noticing that they are discriminating. Age discrimination is towards all age groups. I feel that stereotypes is one factor that contributes to age discrimination. Many people create certain stereotypes about one’s age, and sometimes its hard to change that stereotype because your constantly reminded of what you are “known as”. For example, many people call younger teens and kids lazy and are inclined to social media. However, this may be common in young teenagers, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that every teenager is lazy and is always on social media. Growing up, me and my friends always kept a job and would participate in community service events. But because people are so conformed to their own beliefs, it’s hard for them to change that belief and view of others. I also feel that the media is a big factor that contributes to age discrimination. The media portrays images that tells you what you should look like, which many people look up to because their role models are influencing this behavior. For example: There’s celebrities that does commercials about anti-aging cream or makeup convincing people who are older and have wrinkles to buy these products to make them look “beautiful” and young. This then causes women in society to feel that if your old and have wrinkles then you’re not “beautiful”. Also, Television and movies are a big factor of age discrimination because movies and tv shows tend to show many stereotypes towards people ages, which causes society to conform to that because that’s all they been shown/ taught. For example: Many movies show grandparents living in a nursing and being depressed, or unable to live their life because of their age or if they have diseases. This causes society to believe that this is what happens to all people of old age. I feel that in order to reduce age discrimination society should eliminate the media that shows discrimination towards a certain age or generation. The media seems to become comfortable with making jokes about certain generations, which makes society think it’s okay. So, I feel that eliminating movies and tv shows like this could help reduce age discrimination. Another factor that could reduce age discrimination is allowing older workers to be able work in the same workplace and have the same workload as younger people. I feel that this is a big problem in society. Becoming more acceptable to everyone regardless their age can help and prove to others that no matter your age, you can do anything.
I like how you pointed out the age discrimination within media and movies/TV. I agree with you thinking about how older adults in movies are seen as frail and fragile in nursing homes, it does make a difference in how people view others in that age category. I think media plays a big role into what society thinks about other age groups that are not their own. It is definitely something that can be worked on!

I think that you are correct in regards to the stereotypes and media portraying certain things among age groups. What you are discussing could have been very persuasive when describing the effects of healthy aging. I feel as though your examples were towards what society thinks of certain age groups, where as, you could have focused on what the discrimination amongst different ages looks like. There is a lot of controversy in the work place in regards to older and younger people being unable to work with each other due to the social stigmas that surround it. We are always pointing fingers at the elderly or they are putting the blame of slack on the younger generations. You did make some very insightful and helpful points, however. Thank you for your post.

i agree there is age discrimination and generational discrimination. on the point of the stereotypes i agree not all teenagers are lazy and don’t do anything but i do think the vast majority are. I came from a private school and not my parents but some other parents had a lot of money. You walk through the parking lot and there are some old honda civics but there was also some new audis, some jeeps, some trucks, and some modded cars out there. My school wasn’t that big so i knew who drove them. Those are the same kids when i mentioned my car is a 2017 cruze that was $17k and i have been paying $300 a month since i was 16 and i’m not 19 they would laugh and say, “i couldn’t imagine my parents forcing me to pay for my car and have a job.” that’s kind of a loose example but i do think the vast majority are lazy and don’t do anything simply because they don’t have responsibilities. What keeps me tied to going to work all the time is that i know if i don’t i can wake up and have my car repossessed. Another example is when i bought my mom’s 2010 ford fusion off her for $1,500. that was the KBB on it. One of my friends said, “how do you drive a nice car?” it was nice compared to his Pontiac grand am. i said, “i work every weekend and i bought it from my mom and we took care of it over the years.” It was new when we bought it in 2010. he said, “I would never have a job at 16, i wouldn’t want to do that.” The point in the end i think a lot of teenagers are lazy and don’t do anything is because their parents don’t put responsibilities on them like making them buy a car or their phone.
With the elderly in the work place. older people can’t move as fast as younger people. At my work my 90 year old owner i am sure he cant stock the cooler of all the different beer while dodging cars coming in, in under 2-3 hours. I can barely do it sometimes. In my opinion i think employees shouldn’t turn away older people i think when they hire them they shouldn’t hold them to the same work standards as the 17 year old in shape football player kid. It’s just unrealistic.

You raise a good point about how media has a big influence on age discrimination and gave good examples of how discrimination is in the media. I have never really thought about this because when I typically think of age discrimination I usually would think about the workplace and in public places, I didn’t think to include tv and media. You also raised a good point about how stereotypes make age discrimination even worse. I agree and like the fact that you said that age discrimination is in all age groups not just the young or old. In the workplace I think that if older adults are still capable and willing to work they should be able to. I definitely think they should still be hired and if they aren’t capable of doing more physically inclined jobs your could put them on less physically demanding positions.

I completed agree that stereotypes play a big role in age and generational discrimination. I think the more that the stereotypes are being forced out into our society through our television and our films the more people are starting to believe them and think that it is okay to make jokes and to treat people differently based off of their age. I agree with you that if we stop portraying people in television and movies based on their age stereotypes then people might stop discriminating so much.

I really like how you brought up movies! Old people do indeed look depressed in them. I can’t imagine what it would be like to be someone who was elderly and watching them. Well, given that I am already influenced by actors my age on television, I wouldn’t think it would be such a far stretch to assume that it must greatly impact the elderly as well. I hope they portray older people as happier in future films to come.

I never thought about age discrimination as it relates to the media. You bring up many good points about there being age discrimination in the media. I guess I always thought that only people could discriminate but not in shows or things like that.

I agree with you completely! I think the media plays a major part in age discrimination and the stereotypes that come along with it. I also agree with what you say about how older people in movies always look sad and depressed, I never thought about that until now! You raise a lot of good points!

I like how you brought up that discrimination can occur without even noticing. Discrimination and prejudice may be something that we are unconscious about. I also appreciate how you pointed out that different age groups experience age-based discrimination and listed examples of both younger and older individuals. I enjoy your focus on the media as it does show a lot of differences and values that are portrayed. Social media can be dangerous as it does tend to spread age-related stereotypes You might notice how older adults are portrayed in media. Some might be considered forgetful.
